Ever since the creation of Escape Rooms, they have become all the rage among all ages, including students! Ever since my ELA teaching experience with 8th grade students at Woodland Jr. High School, I have been actively looking for cool new activities to incorporate in my lesson planning just like this one. I first tried out this activity with my eighth graders at Woodland and loved the learning outcomes and feedback my students gave me about it.
To begin this lesson, I told students to look around the room and told them where to spot the papers taped to different walls that told them the instructions to each "task" they must complete before trying their hand at deciphering the last ELA riddle. The group of students (no more than four members to a group) who answered each task correctly and solved the last riddle the fastest, won not only a good grade on their assignment, but as well as a Dum Dum sucker of their choosing for added incentive. In the video below, you can watch me give my eighth grade secondary students at Woodland Jr. High School their instructions for this "Escape Room" ELA activity.
Below here, I have linked the Escape Room materials I used in the classroom with my students. You can click on the image and it will download the lesson's materials and resources to your computer for a better look at this interesting twist on test prepping your students.
If you're interested in giving the Escape Room activity lesson a try, I suggest also taking a look at the "Read It. Write it. Learn it." blog here. She has tons of cool resources and tips on how to create your own ELA escape room activity and even links her lessons to other escape room activities that involve poetry, figurative language and more.
