A Raisin in the Sun Unit Plan (2021)

Updated: Apr 19, 2021

I created this unit plan to center around the anchor text, Lorraine Hansberry's: A Raisin in the Sun, which will take course over the period of about two week's worth of class time. I begin this lesson with a few historical/ELA scaffolded activities and concepts before truly diving into the main lesson and allocated time within the unit planning for students to read the main text in the classroom during each lesson.

This teaching guide helps instructors use a specific primary source set, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, in the classroom. It offers discussion questions, classroom activities, and primary source analysis tools. It is intended to spark pedagogical creativity by giving a sample approach to the material. Please feel free to share, reuse, and adapt the resources in this guide for your teaching purposes.

Below here, I have also included a Summative assessment for this two week unit plan on Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun that includes a student handout with instructions for their final assignment and a grading rubric for teacher's to use after student's complete the web-based assignment.

The unit plan's main and guiding Arkansas state standard is RL.9-10.2 which states that students will be able to, "determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text" by the end of this unit.

Various other state standards are utilized as well throughout this unit to create a cohesive and all-encompassing approach to teaching this anchor text and allowing students to facilitate their growth and development with ELA concepts and ideas in the classroom.

In addition to creating the Summative assessment student handout and grading rubrics, I also wanted to create a model website as an example for my students to base their own projects on and create their own twist and ingenuity into the assignment. If you're interested in my example website based on the Summative Assessment guidelines, then you can visit it here or at https://lanecaitlin333.wixsite.com/dreamdeffered.
